PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Hannan sport & leisure team  undertook contracts for DW Sports & formerly JJB for over 15 years. We provided M&E consultancy for the fit out of over 60 DW Sports health clubs throughout the UK and Ireland and have also worked on a selection of ‘Soccer Domes’ and superstores aswell as undertaking various projects at Wigan Athletic’s DW Stadium.

Facilities at each health club include: swimming pool; steam rooms and spas; gym areas; group exercise studios; changing rooms; members lounge and bar.

Our designs have constantly evolved, remaining up to date and at the leading edge of low-energy design.

To reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, the latest health club designs incorporate LED lighting to the majority of areas, absence and presence detection lighting control in toilet and back of house areas, displacement ventilation with free cooling when external conditions allow to the Gym area, inverter driven pumps, heat recovery on ventilation systems and a reduction in stored hot water capacity.

In addition, monitoring of the pool hall conditions is incorporated onto the automatic controls system to raise alarms when internal conditions (and in turn energy usage) exceed parameters. Manual covers for the pool and spas are also now installed overnight in conjunction with night setback on ventilation plant to further reduce energy usage.

Cumbria County Council Offices

Cumbria County Council Offices

Cumbria County Council Offices

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This £10.4m office building in Carlisle, is the new headquarter offices for Cumbria County Council, and will form an essential component in the council’s transformation.

The aspiration of the Council was to occupy a building which is sustainable, and integrates passive design, low energy technologies and reduced maintenance requirements. In response the primary focus of the design of the building, and the associated MEP services installations was to maximise natural ventilation, natural day lighting, minimise heat gains within the building and incorporate renewable and low energy technologies in order to reduce energy consumption and the associated production of carbon dioxide.

The building services installations contribute to the overall sustainability of the building by incorporating renewable, low energy systems and sustainable technologies such as;
• Natural/Mixed Mode Ventilation
• Variable Refrigerant Flow simultaneous sheeting & cooling systems to cellular spaces
• Free cooling using outside air
• Night time cooling
• LED lighting technology
• Rainwater harvesting to serve flushing cisterns
• Roof mounted photovoltaics

The mechanical and electrical services are designed to maximise flexibility of the open plan office space and to facilitate the possible future sub division of the office area.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Hannan Associates were employed to undertake the M&E Design for the refurbishment of the Art Deco, Grade II listed Kingsway Health Centre. The former Kingsway Health Centre underwent a significant refurbishment programme to create an environment that young people want to visit and can participate in activities. The facility has been designed to promote volunteering, education, employment and training and ‘good teen health’.

A new multifunction hall has been built including a recording studio, radio room and control facilities for the audio and visual equipment. The new hall has multi function use for communal classes and live performances. The new function hall is naturally ventilated by the automatic operation of ‘Monodraught’ towers and opening windows.

The building has external solar shading to minimise solar gains during the summer months to the south façade and the structure is of medium weight construction to help reduce peak temperatures within the hall. The intention of the ventilation strategy in the new main hall is to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Hannan Associates are very pleased to have been part of the team who delivered Conwy County Borough Council’s new 100,000 sq ft Civic Offices in Colwyn Bay Town Centre after Muse Developments were chosen as the preferred development partner for the scheme during 2015.

The four storey, 100,000 sq ft office building has enabled the council to operate more efficiently and improve services for customers by consolidating staff and services into fewer sites.

The new building is BREEAM 2014 Excellent with an A rated Energy Performance Certificate. Passive design measures to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption include enhanced insulation to the building envelope and engineered facade design.

The glazed proportion of the building façade and the central atrium maximizes natural daylight to offset the demand for lighting whilst at the same time high performance glazing minimizes thermal losses. To further reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption, the building’s heating and cooling is produced via air source heat pumps, highly efficient LED lighting and roof mounted photovoltaic arrays.

The project won the ‘Regeneration’ category and was also shortlisted for the ‘Design Through Innovation’ category at the RICS Awards 2019, Wales. It has also won the ‘Best Large Commercial Project’ award at the North Wales LABC Building Excellence Awards 2019. It was shortlisted for a BCO Northern Award 2019 in the ‘Corporate Workplace’ category and an Insider Property Awards 2019 Wales for ‘Development of the Year’.
